Welcome to the White Hart Inn
The White Hart Inn is all about location. It is a beautiful old pub with parts of it being some 250 years old, and with beautiful gardens front and back plus far reaching views across the fields, it is a superb destination to while away a few hours. It sits proudly on a green known locally as Tigers Island.
The 'Island' derived from the fact that when the river Wid flooded and the water rose it never quite reached as high as the pub. The 'Tigers' were the railway builders of last century who got dressed up to visit the pub each weekend, and sometimes resolved their disputes with bare knuckles in the pub precincts! And so Tigers Island found its name! It is also on the well-used St Peters Way footpath always popular with rambling parties.
The property is a traditional Essex weather-board building, with a large single bar and an extensive conservatory. The bar area is dominated by a chimney & wood burning stove a welcome source of warmth on a cold winters day. Liz brought The White Hart in 2002 and has over the years transformed it into a successful country pub serving great food, ale & wine. This has been rewarded with numerous awards (CAMRA) over the years for great real ale and food alike.
Two key events during the year are a stunning Summer Beer Festival with over 60 beers and ciders in a huge Marquee and a smaller Winter Beer Festival during October/November held indoors (beers served from the Tap Room).
There's a fine selection of real ales at the White Hart with house beers coming from local champion brewer Mighty Oak (Oscar Wilde Mild and IPA) and regional stalwart Adnams (Best and Broadside). Her latest addition is Hunters Gold by Red Fox Brewery Coggeshall. Liz and her team keep them all in perfect condition. Apart from this selection, which would get the majority of pubs a fair write-up in the pages of GBBG, Liz always has at least 6/8 real ales serving with guest ales from all over the UK. They are direct from the cask in the Tap Room behind the bar.
The White Hart has a great reputation as a really good place to eat, with the emphasis on using only quality produce from well-respected local suppliers. Head Chef Ting Sayer has been at The White Hart for many years and together with her team provides outstanding traditional pub grub. Food is available 7 days a week with a wide range of meals and snacks. A selection of 'Daily Specials' are featured Blackboards over the fireplace in the main bar.
